Information for Schools planning a visit to Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve

Bringing the primary curriculum to life in nature!

Our Education Team provide a variety of learning experiences in a safe, structured outdoor environment.

We offer full or half day sessions on the activities below which complement aspects of the primary school curriculum, mainly science, geography and history.

Guided walks
  • Seasonal and nature themed (including bespoke ID sheets) eg ‘signs of Spring/Autumn
  • History of Cromwell Bottom
  • River study – observing features of River Calder/other bodies of water and flood alleviation
  • Study of land use on the reserve
  • Wildflower ID
  • Habitats and their creatures
  • General information walk – no specific theme
‘Hands on ‘activities taking place in our Education Area
  • Pond dipping (May to October only)
  • Minibeast hunting
  • Den building
  • Birdwatching, (extending onto main reserve) ID sheets available
  • Bee trail (QR code-based activity plus study of a beehive)
Life cycles sessions
  • Barn Owl – incl dissection of Barn Owl pellets
  • Dragonfly
  • Frog
     Other facilities available
  • Outdoor marquee equipped with table and chairs – available for lunch
  • Outdoor picnic area
  • TV available in Visitor Centre showing wildlife clips from the reserve to watch
  • Resources for wildlife studies include pond dipping nets, insect sweep nets and binoculars suitable for primary school aged children
